One of my top 5 favourite things to do in my "self-care world", has to be getting my makeup done. There's nothing like sitting in that chair, completely blank...feeling a little blaaahhh, and then BAM! Hundreds of little soft brush strokes later, you're looking at yourself saying..."how did she do it?! I look mighty fine!"
Feeling amazing in your own skin is part of being happy and healthy. Yes - it comes from within...but why not give ourselves that little boost on the outside too? Any time is a good time for a makeover.
We are thrilled to welcome Meranda Brown from RandyMakeup to our tribe of Members We LOVE, who knows exactly what I'm talking about. She's the girl who makes the magic happen and is a huge success as a result. We wanted to find out from Meranda, what makes her tick, her thoughts on being an entrepreneur, and what she's most proud of. Read on for inspiration!
Describe your business/career/what you do in a few sentences.
A: I’m a freelance makeup artist, educator and content creator on YouTube. As an artist, I strive to not only beautify the outwards appearance, but to bring forth every women’s inner beauty.
2. What ignited the spark in you to start your business venture or to make significant changes in an existing business? How did the idea for your business come about?
A: In 2011 I started a company with my sister in law, called MiMe’s DollHouse, which is a virgin hair extension distribution company. We really struggled for years to get the company off the ground and one day we decided we would to add some credentials to our business. So I went to the Canadian Beauty College in Toronto and I took the diploma makeup artistry course there, while my sister took a full time hair styling course. Long story short, after we both graduated, I began practicing my makeup skills on myself and friends and soon I started to get a couple clients here and there asking me to do their makeup. It wasn’t long after I found out that I didn’t just want to add makeup to the hair business as a service, but I wanted to go full throttle with it. So in December 2015, I officially decided it was time to put on my big girl pants and venture off into my new found passion on my own and that was also when I made the decision to no longer be apart of MiMe’s DollHouse, which has now been re-branded and relaunched with my sister still as CEO and the company is doing amazing.
3. What would you say are the top four skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur/business?
A: Four top skills I believe you need to have in order to be a successful business/entrepreneur, is to:
Be consistent
Be persistent
Set goals
educate yourself about your craft in order to evolve and grow
4. What book has inspired you the most? (OR What is your favorite book?)
A: I recently started reading “Reposition Yourself: Living Life Without Limits” by T.D. Jakes, which has been very empowering and eye opening. The book inspires its readers to redesign the life they aren’t happy with, reclaim what may be dormant inside of them and to manage life and what it throws at you. Although I’ve just began reading this book, I do recommend it to everyone.
5. What accomplishment are you most proud of? (either for you as an entrepreneur, or your company)
A: Growing up I wanted to own my own business, but always had the mindset that I was incapable of running a business on my own and that I definitely needed someone else to own a business with. I never thought I could actually run my own business, mainly because I was scared I would fail and I never thought of myself as bright enough to do so. So I would say my biggest accomplishment, would be when I finally decided that I was capable to work on my own and do my own thing. I finally went back to college, graduated with an honours diploma and became a makeup artist. That is how RandyMakeup was born.
6. What has been your biggest failure? How did you overcome it?
A: My biggest failure was when I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer, went to college for fashion business and then realizing how much work and passion it took to be a designer, I dropped out of college in 2006 and basically had no idea what I wanted to do in life. Life consisted of going from job to job, program to program. I was so afraid of failure because I never finished college and allowed that to keep me from doing anything. I overcame this by starting a hair business with my sister in law in 2011 and I started writing down my goals. Eventually I went back to college in 2013 and from there, I truly found my passion in makeup artistry and never looked back.
7. Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
A: In 10 years I would like to be a well established, Christian celebrity makeup artist in the beauty industry, especially within bridal makeup. I hope to become a house-hold brand name, with my own makeup and eyelash collection. I also see myself becoming a world-wide influencer, not only in beauty but in helping women to become spiritually uplifted, while walking in their true destiny and purpose, and using platforms such as my YouTube channel and other media outlets.
