Love Thy Neighbour, Love Thy Self

Every time we have a decision to make about a situation, a person or ourselves we can access love and choose to act from that place. This practice of mindfully looking at the world through a loving lens changes so much in our lives - our perspective, our understanding, our ability to be compassionate, kind and positive with others as well as ourselves.

When we can hold space for loving kindness toward others an amazing thing happens…we receive it back in ways that are often unexpected and magnificent! Like so many of the positive tools we have available to us, we must practice giving LOVE to others on a daily basis. For years now, I have invested my heart in a practice called Metta Meditation. This scripted meditative practice helps me send the positive energy I receive back out into the universe. It is a beautiful and peaceful practice with many physical and emotional benefits. Metta means loving kindness and is a Buddhist practice of meditation that cultivates the heartfelt wish for well being for you and others. I share it with you here so you may experience the gift of sharing your love intentionally.

ACTION: This simple yet powerful prayer affirms your hearts ability to love with abundance and to offer healing and hope to yourself, those you love and your larger community. Try using this meditation once a day for one week and feel the deepen connection you have to yourself and those you hold in your thoughts, even if you do not tell them

much love,

A Guided Metta Meditation

Find a comfortable position sitting with your feet on the ground and your hands in your lap. Close your eyes and begin simply witnessing your breath.

Observe the inflow and outflow of your breath without attempting to control it in any way.

You may find that your breathing spontaneously becomes faster or slower, deeper or shallow and may even pause for a time.

Allow the changes to occur without resistance or anticipation.

Whenever your attention drifts away from your breath to a thought in your mind, a sensation in your body or a sound in your environment gently return your awareness to your breathing.

Continue this breathing awareness meditation for the next minute or so

Now bring our attention into your heart. Sense your heartbeat either as a sound or a sensation. You may place your hand on your chest to help you feel the pulsing of your heart.

Experience gratitude in your heart by considering all the things in your life for which you are grateful.

Think about the people in your life that you love and the people who share their love with you.

Spend a minute now reviewing the gifts in your life for which you are appreciative.

Now we will practice a metta meditation.

Beginning with ourselves feel the warmth and love being pumped by your heart throughout your whole body.

Let it wash over and through you while you gently or silently say:

May I be well, healthy and strong

May I be happy

May I live in peace

May I feel safe and secure

May I feel loved and cared for

May I feel the flow of joy and abundance in my life

Now turn your attention to someone who is important to you, someone you love and respect.

Engulf them with this warmth and caring as you gently or silently say:

May you be well, healthy and strong

May you be happy

May you abide in peace

May you feel safe and secure

May you feel loved and cared for

May you feel the flow of joy and abundance in your life

Now radiate this love and warmth to people all around you and send it to people in far off places so they may feel the comfort of your words as you gently or silently say:

May we be well, healthy and strong

May we be happy

May we abide in peace

May we feel safe and secure

May we feel loved and cared for

May we feel the flow of joy and abundance our my life

Bring your attention back to yourself so the feeling fills your whole being, breathing in peacefully, breathing out peacefully, at peace with yourself and the world.

When you are ready, slowly open your eyes and come back to the here and now.
