What a Treat to Get to Know This Lovely Lady!!
Q. Describe your business/career/what you do in a few sentences.
A. I’m a speaker, yoga and mindfulness teacher and I specialize in helping employees transition from overwhelmed and ineffective to focused and efficient! I help people work happier not harder.
Q. What ignited the spark in you to start your business venture or to make significant changes in an existing business? How did the idea for your business come about?
A. I experienced the incredible benefits of a mindfulness practice within my career as an event coordinator. I was experiencing more energy at work, more focus and more productivity by using simple mindfulness techniques. My gut told me to begin to share what I know within a workplace setting and my business has naturally unfolded from there! I work within the workplace, one on one with people and speak at conferences and meetings about how easy it is to infuse mindfulness into our workday, and the benefits we can receive.
Q. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur/business?
A. A positive attitude, passion for what you do and an incredible amount of resilience!
Q. What book has inspired you the most?
A. Right now I’m loving anything by Mark Nepo! The Book of Awakening has so many beautiful moments to remind us of what’s really important in life. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the minutae of life. Mark Nepo’s writing reminds you of the big picture.
Q. What accomplishment are you most proud of?
A. I’m really proud that I have built a business around my passion. That everyday I can say that my work is an expression of what I think matters the most. To slow down, to pause and enjoy every moment of our life. To remember that life is not what has happened in the past, or what is yet to occur in our future - but it’s happening right now! To fully engage with life and work and be grateful for our experience.
Q. What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
A. I try to always make time for my practice (yoga and meditation) as I know it fuels me and is really the definition of walking my talk. Now that my business is growing I’m starting to make less sacrifices (like missing out on camping trips or sometimes working in the evening), in favour of spending my energy on the essentials of my business. Whatever sacrifices I have made, like giving up a steady paycheque from a regular 9 - 5 job, a pension, etc. have been totally worth the joy that my business brings me. I truly can’t imagine being as happy doing anything else.
Q. Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
A. In 10 years I’ll be presenting keynote sessions on a regular basis and holding annual retreats in the Rocky Mountains. I look forward to taking my own personal retreats twice each year to be a student and to hone my own practices. My work will take me around the world sharing the teachings of mindfulness. I see myself as an author, teacher, expert and coach of mindfulness. I’m sure there are possibilities in my future that I haven’t even considered yet — and that excites me!
